Speaking secrets from the TEDx Melb Curator - Jon Yeo

It’s no secret that attention spans are reducing. Social media platforms like Twitter and TikTok have challenged our ability to stay focused on long content pieces. The average TikTok ad is only 10 seconds. This is a big deal for professional speakers if our average speech is 45 minutes.

In 2004, the average TED talk was 18 minutes, but by 2018 most people abandoned these ‘lengthy’ clips at nine minutes. And in 2022, they abandoned them at five minutes. All that effort to craft the perfect 18 minute speech… only to lose the audience after five. Ouch!

Our audience's capacity to consume content is compressing delivery time frames and challenging us as speakers to make an impact, in less time. Clients are asking for shorter sessions, more engagement and even greater outcomes. Which begs the question - how do we deliver more impact, in less time?

This was the challenge faced by the curator of TEDx Melbourne - Jon Yeo at the height of the pandemic. How did the TEDx team keep 2,500 attendees at their virtual TEDx event, from switching off after five minutes? And can we transfer these lessons to live speaking?

In this session you will:

  • Learn the strategies used to boost the Net Promoter Score of the TEDx events from 50 (already considered a good score) to 90! (Engagement on steroids!)
  • Workshop your own content to reduce length, but preserve impact
  • Learn Jon’s 5-step process for creating a compelling 2 minute narrative to keep people engaged

Note: Net Promoter Score is an internationally recognised standard for measuring customer experience. The rating range is -100 to +100, where 0 is considered average and 20 is considered market defining.
