In the Arabian folk-tale, “Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp”, a poor boy discovers a magic lamp, which brings him riches. A wicked sorcerer steals the lamp, by offering “New Lamps for Old” to Aladdin’s servant. But Aladdin defeats the sorcerer, recovers the lamp, and lives happily ever after! The moral of the story: Hold on to your treasures.

For 18 years from 1972-1990, Deane Hutton CSP and Rob Morrison wrote and presented the Curiosity Show - a Science and Technology television program for young people. It was broadcast by more than 40 stations across Australia and in 15 other countries.
In the past four years, Deane and Rob have been re-editing and assembling segments from the original Curiosity Show into a new YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/curiosityshow). This ‘retro’ Curiosity Show YouTube channel has been visited by more than 4.2 million viewers. Substantial new audiences have been created in USA, India, Germany, Australia, UK, Canada and many other countries. Also, Deane and Rob have produced three DVDs with favourite segments from the Curiosity Show which are available through the YouTube channel.
METAPHORS, MODELS & SURPRISES
This evening Dean will share with you how he uses examples from the Curiosity Show in his professional speaking presentations and in the social media. In addition, he uses visual metaphors from his Channel Seven news stories, and the element of surprise from science segments on Hey Hey It’s Saturday. The most effective stories and activities from the past are being re-worked for current presentations and the social media. There is life and magic left in the old lamp!
